Third Millennium Alliance was founded in 2007 with the objective to conserve the last remnants of Pacific Equatorial Forest in coastal Ecuador, and the wide range of endangered and endemic species therein contained, and meanwhile catalyze a long-term shift in land management practices onto a sustainable course in this and other ecologically vulnerable regions throughout the tropics. Our method is a pragmatic approach that combines the establishment and management of protected areas and conservation corridors with the direct engagement of local communities through education, training and technical assistance, and sustainable economic alternatives. In the area of wildlife conservation, there is a special focus on the six different species of wild felines that inhabit coastal Ecuador, with the rare and imperiled ocelot as the flagship species. In the area of sustainable land management, agroforestry and permaculture design are the primary strategies that we practice ourselves and support on a regional scale, particularly through our Micro-Forestation program with local landholders. We consider ourselves but one arm of a larger movement that is in need of practitioners on the ground. Our field operations are based out of the Jama-Coaque Ecological Reserve, which represents one of the last major remnants of rainforest and cloud forest in coastal Ecuador.
Information about Third Millennium Alliance's organizational background, as well as the Management Team and Advisory Board, can be viewed here. All projects implemented by Third Millennium Alliance in coastal Ecuador adhere to the dual approach of conserving native habitat and working with local communities to sustainably manage natural resources.
