Tropical forests represent the greatest reservoir of genetic wealth, the greatest factory of fresh water and oxygen, and the greatest regulator of global rainfall and weather patterns on earth. Humanity has already eliminated half of the world’s rainforest, and the rest will be lost within the next 40 years if there is not a change in the management of these resources. The water and food shortages, climate disruption, and the general resource crunch that is caused, in significant part, by the loss of tropical forests will threaten the social and economic security of every nation on earth. Reforestation, on the other hand, is the single most effective way to restore the natural capital of the planet.
